Primal Beginnings
by Tessa Warburton
It became clear while working in association with people who had experiencedmajor mental health issues that the " fine arts" is a field whichsays "yes" to a lot of phenomenological material that almostall fields say "no" to, and that in an effort to better understandand thus destigmatize the "mental illnesses" a new and differentkind of organization needed to be born. One which encouraged individualexpression and production of artifacts and which "actually" integratesthe "ill" with the "healthy" in activities where neitherhad more "status" nor "credibility" than the other.
A founding Board of Directors was formed by Ms Warburton in the fallof 1992 and in December of that year Primal was formally registered asa non-profit society. The decision to be a non-profit was based on economics. No one had the money it would take to form a corporate entity. The originalBoard was : Chair - Tessa Warburton, Secretary- Ken Kibblewhite, Treasurer-Dr.Harvey Breen, At Large - Carole Thompson, Daryll Adams and Lance Marsel. The monthly Coffeehouse was and still is the public showcase for performingartists, and a variety of programs in writing, painting, theatre, and videoevolve and continue also.
