Brief History and Purpose
PMHPA is going into it’s third year of production: It’s purpose is todemonstrate the gifts of creative people who have had mental illness- tofacilitate consumer input into the production of video, audio, and printproductions- to promote presentations to the community - to provide opportunitiesfor mental health consumers by socially integrating them into the productionprocess.
PMHPA runs a monthly Coffee Houseandthis coffee house is the necessary central social amalgamation point ofthe performance, video, art, and writing programs.
Goals & Benefits of the Project:
The overall purpose of the Coffee House Project is to provide a performancevenue for the achievers in the arts programs run by the PMHPA society.It also acts as a an intake for new members and serves as a showcase tothe community in general. The distinct and unique aspect of the PMHPA coffeehouse is the fact that it is an integrated program that combines “consumers”with the so called “ well.” This applies to both performers and audience.We also run a kitchen and baking program in conjunction with the productionof the coffee house.
Objectives
The performers also serve as models for the video documentation andthe video documentation serves to disseminate information and provide feedbackfor the performers in general. These performances supply us with the candidatesfor audio production and books published by the society. The integratedaspect of the program provides PMHPA with an unusually high volunteer supportbase.
People and other organizations involved in this project:
Our members come from a broad based association representing a generaldiversity of the mental health community. The major associations are withWest Coast Mental Health Network , MPA, Coast Foundation,G.V.M.H.C., C.M.H.C, C.M.H.A. , Stepping Stone and our video services haveextended in general into the community.
