Bob Turner


Vancouver born musician and composer, Bob Turner has reached into cyberspaceand found not only a place for himself as a Web Site Procucer but anothermedium in which to explore and present his life -long interest in communicationand the arts. His extensive personal arts history spans some thirty years,and ranges from promoting and performing in local arts events to touringwith noted Jazz groups as a bass violin player to representing Canada atExpo 86 and at Expo 88 in Australia. Bob Turner has composed music forDance and Theater companies and for performance art -projects; he foundedand directed a Theatre -Performance Gallery in Vancouver; and has independentlyproduced four cassettes of original compositions which he performs on midi-keyboards,flute and bass violin.
Bob Turner was Artist in Residence at Simon Fraser University during1989-1991 there he realized his ideas to empower disabled musicians bydirecting the designing and development of digital electronic componentswhich gave the disabled musician the possibility of an actual reconnectionwith making music. Subsequently the midi-modem-midi device was perfectedso that musicians who are immobile can now musically communicate with othermusicians in real time from city to city over a telephone link to the digitaltechnology. He was also instrumental in assembling several performancegroups of disabled musicians and recorded and videod their work. Notablefull length productions were “Spinal Chord” funded by the Vancouver AdaptedMusic Society and “Frank Popow” funded by Access Arts Canada.
In the past three years Bob Turner has turned his efforts towards workingwith mentally disabled artists by producing music cassettes, publishingpoetry, and by establishing a venue to encourage performance
integrationin an area fraught with cultural bias.
Bob Turner’s interest in electronic composition has taken him from thepoint of assembling a music production and video studio on into the fieldof multi-media computer technology and web site development. In 1995 heand his computer -programmer- partner, Jeff Koftinoff , launched theirInternet Filter software to address concerns over issues of censorshipand freedom of expression in a world where vigilance is mandatory for thosewho value an unfettered liberal approach to personal statement and creativity.With his latest advancement towards establishing and operating a VirtualSite Internet domain connection (www.turnercom.com), Bob Turner continuesto move in an unlimited realm of ideas in his search to contribute to thecommunity as an artist, and as a facilitator linking the arts with scienceand technology.
