Kids Guernica
A collaborative mural coordinated through the Richmond Arts Centre with
artist Richard Tetrault and 75 youth, this travelling mural is one of more
than 35 murals done by children around the world on the theme of world
peace. The bird, patterned with First Nation motifs, a pair of hands united,
and lettering stating world peace, rises from a frieze of burning cities.
The puzzle pieces, each painted by a youth, imply the need for many elements
to come together in order to achieve peace.
Originating between the United States and Japan, Kids Guernica was
brought to Canada in 1997. The series, inspired by Picasso’s painting,
Guernica, was shown at the Vancouver International Airport while the Richmond
mural was painted. It will tour Europe in 2001/2002 before the murals are
returned to the sponsoring countries.
